Creating a space for children to grow, thrive and make lasting friendships.

In 2019, the YMCA purchased the site of the former Impact Church through the support of the Frank Twining King Memorial Fund with the dream of opening a new YMCA. Part of that purchase included a home that housed the administrative offices for the church. Throughout the capital campaign for the Litehouse Family YMCA, the community shared that additional childcare services are a critical need for the area and asked the Y to help.

The call to action inspired the Y to both explore the potential for the house on site, as well as connect with potential lead donors to launch a campaign that spoke to creating strong kids today and tomorrow. Two donors, Susan Riddle and Kate Dernocoeur, are long-time YMCA members whose powerful story speaks to the impact of connections and relationships and the role the Y can play in creating incredible communities. Their story became the launch of a campaign, and we ask you to join us on this journey.

The campaign for the Strong Kids Child Development Center is named for Susan and Kate who met in 2001 at the Lowell YMCA on Main Street. Their friendship began with a chance conversation on side-by-side treadmills during a simple morning workout. They quickly became dedicated workout partners well-known to all the “regulars” - and their friendship remains strong to this day. As they know all too well, life’s journey is filled with challenges.

In 2002, Susan survived a life-threatening head injury caused by a drunk driver and credits the wonderful staff of the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital for saving her life but Kate and the staff of Lowell YMCA in supporting her during every step of her recovery, helping to return her to a strong life. One gift of the strong bond of Susan and Kate’s friendship is sponsorship of this center. They hope generations of kids will grow to be strong in every way and discover enduring friendships that last a lifetime as well.

Please join them, Litehouse, Inc. and the Y in raising awareness and support for the potential of this center. With $450,000 we can create 4 classrooms serving infants, toddlers, early preschool, and preschool and prepare countless youth for success in Kindergarten and beyond.
Just $300,000 remains toward that goal.
